Located just 45 minutes from the crackling energy of New York City’s arts scene, the Theater Department at Mason Gross School of the Arts provides students with a well-rounded and highly demanding program for those serious about pursuing a career as a theater professional. The training consists of intensive studio classes, innovative academic curricula, and fully-supported productions. We are committed to developing artists of the highest caliber who are prepared to join the profession and be a part of the next generation of theater practitioners and innovators.
The program offers a BFA degree in Theater with concentrations in Scenic Design, Costume Design, Lighting Design and Costume Technology. We provide students with essential design skills as well as a strong foundation in theater history and theory. Design students can expect rigorous and comprehensive training in the skills, and techniques necessary to pursue a professional career. The faculty are distinguished working professionals who provide students with one-on-one mentoring and bring access to the best current ideas and practices. Students have opportunities to design department shows to see their ideas realized on stage in performance and build a portfolio. Visiting professional designers and directors provide additional opportunities to learn and create a network for after graduation.
